Types of Back Injury
Whiplash - This is commonly known as a neck injury however it actually affects the back as well. Sudden, jaulting movements can result in pulled muscles or muscle spasms and if this occurs in the back area then it can be extremely discomforting and disabling.
Slipped Discs – ‘Slipping a disc’, as it is commonly referred to, is also an extremely painful injury. It can occur in the most unexpected situations such as coughing or sneezing, but it can also result from over-working, poor posture or a blow to the back.
Pulled Back Muscle – Pulled muscles result from over stretching or straining for something. If the muscle is pulled then a rest, ice, compression routine should be followed. If the muscle has been torn, however, then this is more severe and medical advice will need to be sought.
Acute Pain – This refers to a pain which comes and goes. The pain may come on strong and quickly however it may go away just as fast. This type of injury could take at least 6 weeks to heal.
Chronic Pain – This is a persistent pain and indicates a specific injury. Doctors describe a pain as being ‘Chronic’ if you have been suffering from it for between 3 to 6 months. Chronic back pain will result in lack of mobility.
Chronic pain is usually the reason people claim compensation for back injuries. It is a severe injury as it can result in disability for a long period of time, meaning loss of earnings for many people.
